Benefits of working out at home

Updated: Aug 30, 2020

Workouts have taken on a new look since March 2020.

Some have taken up running, some have joined online fitness groups via Facebook Live or Zoom, and some joined popular fitness apps. Whatever the case may be, you've found a workout without the comfort of the gym. We've gotten resourceful with weights and have had to change things up. Both of which are good things. When we are forced out of our comfort zone we create change.

Changing our workouts creates changes in our bodies both physically and mentally. Learning new skills and challenge our bodies with new movement keeps our synapses firing as we figure out how to move differently and changes our bodies.

Other benefits of changing up our workouts include: overcoming boredom, reducing overuse injuries, and breaking the fitness plateau. Think about it...we used to walk into the gym, head to our favorite group exercise class, jump on the treadmill, or hit the weights. Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

  1. Overcoming Boredom - The last word a workout should be in boring. If it's boring you're not engaged. If you're not engaged your productivity is down; meaning you're not really trying or the motivation is not there. A huge part to being successful in maintaining a workout program or schedule to engagement. It keeps us coming back for more.

  2. Reducing Overuse Injuries - The repetition of doing the same exercise(s) over and over can cause stress and stress to the muscles and surrounding tissues. This impacts our performance. Changing up our workout reduces these injuries and creates balance in our bodies.

  3. Breaking Fitness Plateaus - This is where our bodies adjust to the demands we continuously place on it. This isn't to say that it didn't take effort to reach that plateau, many times we've trained to reach a goal and achieved that goal. This is where we need to push the boundaries and either go beyond our goals or train differently. We've all heard it...Cross-Training.

Making changes to our workouts benefits us and our fitness. And, if there is one thing that has become apparent since March, there is no shortage of workouts or exercises. Get out there and try something new - Functional Weights, HIIT Strength & Cardio, Strength Training, Running, Swimming, HIIT, Cycling, etc.
